About the Artisans
In Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, the Lu (Lự) people have woven brocade for generations. In fact, Lu communities consider brocade weaving a measure of a woman’s skill and reliability, and a loom is an indispensable tool in every household. Lu women learn the craft from their mothers and grandmothers; they do everything by hand – growing cotton, spinning yarn, weaving fabric, embroidering, and dyeing. Despite competition from factory textiles, these artisans continue to weave rustic but beautiful fabrics that embody their pride and tradition.
Our embroidered purses are crafted by Lu women who honour these time‑honoured techniques. Each purchase ensures that this rare art form survives and provides stable income in one of Vietnam’s most remote regions.
